Blake Island | Aebleskiver or Poffertjes?

ToG and Coorie Doon parted company yesterday morning, CD leaving Poulsbo for Des Moines and home, and ToG for Blake Island.

Thanks for the photos, Jeanie!

On a whim, Nick and I purchased an Aebleskiver pan (been wanting one for a while, actually) and…Poffertjes mix, at the little Marina Market in Poulsbo. We fondly remember the Poffertjes we ate at our B&B in Amsterdam…

I’ve done a little research and I know these two things are different – Aebleskiver from Denmark and Poffertjes from The Netherlands. But the market didn’t have Aebleskiver mix, and I didn’t have the ingredients on the boat to make the batter from scratch. So, it just seemed logical to purchase the Poffertjes mix in a box. They are both basically small pancakes, and we all know there are many different kinds of pancakes!

My first attempt/experiment photos follow. I cranked the heat a bit on our little electric burner, and played around with the amount of batter in each “dimple.” (The batch with lesser batter was easier to turn but the bottom never touched the surface so didn’t brown.) I also sprayed the pan at first, then stopped. No sticking! (Cast iron pan.)

The inside of these stayed a bit underdone, it seemed. Maybe they are supposed to retain a slightly creamy center? The small metal skewer worked perfectly as a turning tool. All in all, we enjoyed them and I look forward to trying other batter recipes and mixes, as well as having the proper toppings: powdered sugar, jam, fruit...

The weather is good and the scenery is beautiful, although fall is definitely in the air. It’s time to turn the heat on and buy a comforter for the bed!

We’ll stay here for another night then head south to Gig Harbor to spend Labor Day weekend. Hopefully, Stay Awhile will join us.
