Summer Cruise 2021 | Days 26 - 29

ToG and Coorie Doon rafted together in Fish Bay (as we’re told the locals call it!) for the first night, then CD moved to the breakwater at IMC for the second night.

We walked to Lopez Village a few times, taking in the Saturday market and the Barn Owl Bakery stand. The picture doesn’t show it but the line was quite long. (I want to think that the boy in the photo is overwhelmed with all the choices!) I bought a rustic loaf and crackers at Blossom grocery, but then Nick bought a sliced country loaf at the market – all so good!

After the market we headed over to Bucky’s for lunch. Closed! The family has gone camping…

We gathered at the Coorie Doon dock with Bill and Jannie (on the Miss J) for happy hour. They will put their Ranger 25 classic on the market soon, as they are buying a Nordic Tug – congratulations!

We said goodbye to Jeanie, Steve, and Gus on Sunday and made our way back to Sucia Island for a night or two before heading further north to Semiahmoo and then south again to Bellingham. That was the plan anyway. We wanted a moorage that was quiet and less crowded so we aimed for Snoring Bay at Sucia. Both mooring balls were empty so we snagged the one closest to shore (we’ve stayed on the other one before). We goofed up our buoy grab a bit and the line got tangled around the chain and the growth on the bottom of the buoy – had to free it and do it again. Lesson learned.) We noticed right away that we were rolling a bit so I looked up my post from our last stay and read, “We rocked and rolled a bit last night…”

Well…that was an understatement. We rocked and rolled A LOT! Not a great night’s sleep and we won’t stay there again. Beautiful and quiet for sure, but exposed to fetch from the east, and especially bad with passing boat traffic.

Nick dropped the crab pot between the rock wall and the boat, just to see what we’d get. Two drops, one keeper (although missing several appendages).

This area is home to tons of pigeon guillemots – this shot shows two of them hanging out on one of the many interesting rock formations:

So…we headed to Semiahmoo yesterday after just one night at Sucia. We motored at about 12 knots across the end of the Strait of Georgia – not bad water, just a little swirly so it was nice to go a bit faster for a change.

We are reminded about how much we enjoy this marina. It’s very nice, has well-kept and appointed grounds, it’s calm, the area kayaking is great, and it’s quiet.

We motored across the short distance to Blaine Harbor, walked around town, had a Vienna Lager at the Tiny Taproom, and then a soft serve at the Edaleen Dairy store, where we also purchased eggs and half & half – interesting place, and good ice cream.

The breakwater at Blaine Harbor was filled with seagulls, and even more cormorants. It wasn’t until we got closer that we realized the cormorants were sitting on nests full of chicks! Quite a sight.

The sunset over the Semiahmoo tower was breathtaking. This photo doesn't do justice to the vibrant red of the sun due to smoky air:

We'll stay here for 2 or 3 nights, taking advantage of amenities at the resort, laundry facilities, and area walks.
