Summer Cruise 2021 | The Sierra Leg | Days 11 & 12

Our attempts to visit Eastsound were thwarted at every turn.

But first, a few thoughts about Deer Harbor. The only other time we visited, we were a little disappointed in the lack of area walking/hiking options. This time we did locate the public footpath, which is nice. Not long, but a nice walk, with this spectacular roadside attraction!

Other shots from that walk:

We left Deer Harbor for Rosario Resort yesterday morning. Our slip wasn't available so we motored up East Sound, hoping to anchor and dinghy a short distance to Eastsound. It was quite choppy and windy and we decided that even if we could anchor, the ride to shore would be too rough. So we headed back to the resort and tied up.

Our other plan was to motor the dinghy all the way back up to town, if conditions were favorable. The wind got worse (25 mph). We looked into catching the island shuttle but $28 per person seemed exorbitant. Oh well...next time...

Sierra has decided to become a seaweed forager. Since her crabbing license includes seaweed harvest, why not? So, on her kayak paddle around Fawn Island (Deer Harbor) she located a kelp bed, bit off a bunch - yes...bit - and brought it back to the boat. The bunch included some "leaves," some stalks and bulbs. She cut it up and...well...ate it. And enjoyed it.

I tried some...enjoyed it less.

She also dried some leaves in the sun and has been munching on it for a salty, seaweedy snack. She's got plans to research and learn more about processing and preparing kelp. Can't wait!

We are now anchored in Shoal Bay with 3 crab pots soaking. First pull...1!
