Whales! | Kayaks | Itinerary

Can’t believe I forgot to mention that we followed (and by “followed” I mean we just happened to be going the same direction…at a distance) a small group of Orcas that were heading south on the east side of Vashon on our way home last Sunday.

Nick purchased some humongous carabiners to hook the kayaks to the upper deck rail. He secured them with line and bungees and they seem to be holding well. We were waked by a fast-moving cargo ship on our way north, and as I was holding on, I took a look at the kayaks to see how they fared. Neither of them budged even slightly. Good sign. We’re going to try this arrangement for a while to see how it works. We can get them down fairly easily by moving them across the pilot house roof to the bow, and then over the side. This placement means we can’t walk along the gunwales but that isn’t really a problem. Finding ways to do things without having to walk the gunwales is a plus. In my opinion.

ToG with kayaks at Port of Everett

We left the Foss yesterday (Friday), headed north to Blake Island. We figured there was a good chance there would be no dock space. It really didn’t look promising but once we got in there were a few places. Note to selves: You really don’t know until you get in there. We did have a talk with the park ranger about installing a camera so people can see the docks before going in…they’re working on it.

Blake was beautiful, as always. We met a couple aboard an AT34 – Salish Nomad. We had one of those small world conversations as we realized we have “coincidental connections” based on Sitka AK. (Thanks for that, Jean T!)

We left Blake this morning for the biggest marina on the west coast – Everett. (Another note to selves – use DockWa for Everett.) Rainy…dreary. Got out for a walk at least. Tomorrow we head for La Conner and the AT factory to see to a couple of things – mainly our not-so-great toilet. We’ll be there for a few days and then we’ll head to the islands. No specific itinerary. Likely the usual haunts.
